A realistic route through Alicante’s essentials without turning the day into a race. Times are approximate: adjust them to the weather and your pace.
What to see in Alicante in one day
Santa Bárbara Castle
Start at the top before the hottest hours. Explore the fortress and enjoy views over the city, harbour and bay.
Santa Cruz and the old town
Walk down through the narrow streets and white houses of Santa Cruz, then continue to Santa María basilica.
Market or local lunch
If the Central Market is open, step inside for local produce. Then choose tapas or a rice dish and enjoy an unhurried lunch.
Town Hall, Explanada and harbour
Cross the traditional centre and stroll beneath the palms of the Explanada beside the harbour.
Postiguet beach
Finish the afternoon by the sea: walk along the shore, rest or continue towards the harbour.
Dinner in the centre
Walk back to the old town for dinner and Alicante’s evening atmosphere.
Before you start
- Check official castle and monument opening times.
- The Central Market does not open every day; if closed, spend longer in the old town.
- Carry water, sun protection and comfortable shoes; Santa Cruz has slopes and steps.
- In summer, shorten the route at midday and continue in the evening.
Adapt the plan
With children
Reach the castle by lift or public transport and allow more time for Postiguet.
If it rains
Replace the beach with MACA, the Bonfire Museum or another central museum.
At a gentle pace
Choose castle and old town in the morning; Explanada and Postiguet in the afternoon.
